West Crete is the best part of the island for dramatic beaches, Chania Old Town, mountain scenery, and Samaria Gorge. If this is your first trip and you care about beaches, Chania is usually the safest base.
Chania Old Town is one of the easiest recommendations in Crete. The old harbor, lighthouse, narrow streets, Venetian buildings, Ottoman-era details, small boutiques, and waterfront restaurants make it feel more like a full destination than a quick stop.
Go in the morning if you want quieter alleys and photos. Go at sunset if you want atmosphere, dinner, and the classic harbor walk. If you are staying in western Crete, this is the place you will probably return to more than once.

Balos Lagoon is one of the most famous beaches in Crete, and for good reason. It has shallow blue water, pale sand, a wild peninsula setting, and the kind of view that makes people build an entire west Crete itinerary around it.
The catch is access. You usually choose between a boat trip from Kissamos or a drive on a rough road followed by a walk. For most visitors, especially families and anyone without a suitable car, the boat is the simpler option.
Tip: if you only have one west Crete beach day, choose between Balos, Elafonisi, and Falassarna instead of trying to force all three into a short stay.
If you want a classic Crete beach day, Elafonisi and Falassarna are two of the best choices from Chania. Elafonisi is known for shallow water and pink-sand tones in some areas. Falassarna is wider, better for a long beach day, and often feels less complicated than Balos.
Families usually like Elafonisi for the shallow water, while couples and beach-day purists may prefer Falassarna for space, sunsets, and a more straightforward layout. Both can be busy in July and August.

Samaria Gorge is the best-known hike in Crete. It runs through the White Mountains in western Crete and is best treated as a full-day adventure, not a casual walk after breakfast.
The route is long, rocky, and seasonal. It usually suits active travelers who are comfortable walking for hours and dealing with logistics at both ends. A guided transfer is often easier than trying to manage buses and timing yourself.

Central Crete is best for Minoan history, museums, wineries, food tours, and easier logistics if you are flying into Heraklion. If you only have two or three days and want the most historically important Crete itinerary, start here.

Knossos is absolutely worth visiting, but it is much better with context. The Heraklion Archaeological Museum is the best museum in Crete and the natural partner to Knossos. If Knossos shows you the palace setting, the museum gives you the objects, frescoes, pottery, jewelry, tools, and Minoan context that make the site more meaningful.
This is also one of the best things to do in Crete when it rains or when the summer heat becomes too much. If you are only mildly interested in archaeology, do Knossos first and then the museum. If you love ancient history, reverse the order and visit the museum before the site.
Crete is an excellent food and wine island, and a wine and olive oil tasting is one of the easiest ways to turn that into an actual experience. You can find tastings near Chania, Heraklion, and several inland villages.

Rethymno Old Town is one of the best places in Crete for travelers who like Chania’s old-town feel but want something a little less intense. Expect narrow lanes, Venetian and Ottoman influences, small restaurants, shops, and the Fortezza overlooking the town.
It is a strong choice for a slow afternoon or evening. If you are driving between Chania and Heraklion, Rethymno also makes a natural stopover, though staying overnight gives you a better feel for it.

Preveli Beach is one of the more distinctive beach stops in southern Crete because it combines a river, palms, cliffs, and sea in one place. It is not the easiest beach on the island, but it is more unusual than a standard sandy bay.
This works best if you are based in Rethymno or building a south-coast day trip. It is less convenient from Chania if you are already planning Balos, Elafonisi, or Falassarna.

This area is especially good for couples, families who want a more comfortable base, and travelers who prefer boat trips and scenic coastal days over long hikes.
The Lasithi Plateau is a good inland escape from the coast. It gives you mountain scenery, villages, old windmill views, and a cooler-feeling route in parts of the year. Many visitors combine it with Dikteon Cave, which is linked to Greek mythology.
This is best for travelers who have a rental car and want to see a different side of Crete. It is not the first activity I would choose for a short beach-focused trip, but it is a strong add-on for east or central Crete.

Good village-based routes depend on your base. From Chania, look inland toward the foothills and traditional villages. From Heraklion, consider wine villages and inland routes. From east Crete, combine villages with the Lasithi Plateau or coastal drives.
A day trip from Crete to Santorini can work, especially if you are based near Heraklion or Rethymno and you mainly want a quick look at Oia, Fira, and the caldera. But it is not a calm day. You are dealing with ferry schedules, transfers, crowds, and limited time on Santorini itself.
Do it if Santorini is a bucket-list stop and you do not have time to sleep there. Skip it if your Crete itinerary is already short. In that case, spend the day on Knossos, Chania, Balos, Spinalonga, or a Cretan food route instead.

You do not need a car for every Crete trip, but you probably need one if you want the best beaches, villages, monasteries, wineries, and flexible day trips. Without a car, choose a strong base such as Chania, Heraklion, or Rethymno and use organized tours for bigger excursions.
A car is most useful for Falassarna, Elafonisi, Arkadi, Lasithi Plateau, villages, wineries, and east Crete road trips. It is less useful for central old-town stays where parking becomes annoying.
