The most important items to organize before any 2026 Greece trip: front-load these and the rest of the prep becomes much easier.
US, UK, Canadian, and Australian citizens do not need a visa for tourist stays of up to 90 days within a 180-day period. ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorisation System) launches in Q4 2026 with a 6-month transitional period, and an approved €20 ETIAS authorization will be required for visa-exempt travelers from these countries for any trip in 2027. EU citizens can use a national ID card.
Yes. If you plan to rent a car, ATV, or scooter in Greece, Greek law requires non-EU citizens to carry an International Driving Permit (IDP) alongside their valid home-country driver license. Rental agencies will refuse service and your insurance is voided without one. US travelers can obtain an IDP at any AAA office for around $20, and UK travelers can apply through the Post Office. The permit is valid for 12 months.
Bring a valid passport (with at least 6 months remaining beyond your departure date) or EU national ID card. Also carry travel insurance documents, hotel and ferry booking confirmations, an International Driving Permit if you plan to drive, and a paper or digital backup of your ETIAS authorization once that system goes live in Q4 2026.
Carry €50 to €100 in physical cash per person per day. Visa and Mastercard are widely accepted at hotels, larger restaurants, and in Athens, but cash is essential for taxis, tipping, kiosks (peripteros), and family-run tavernas on smaller islands. ATMs are available in port towns but can run dry on remote islands during peak summer weekends — withdraw before island-hopping legs.
Greece operates on a 230V supply at 50Hz with Type C and Type F sockets, both of which use two round pins. A standard European travel adapter works for most devices. Travelers from the US, Canada, and Mexico should confirm their electronics are dual-voltage (100-240V) — most laptops and phone chargers are, but hair dryers, curling irons, and some shavers are not, and will need a voltage converter to avoid damage.
Book Greek ferries 4 to 8 weeks in advance for high-speed routes between June and September, especially Athens (Piraeus) to Santorini, Mykonos, or Naxos. Conventional ferries and shoulder-season sailings can usually be booked 1 to 2 weeks ahead. Car ferry reservations are essential year-round. Always keep a 24-hour buffer between your last island-to-Athens ferry and a long-haul return flight to absorb Meltemi-wind delays.
