Hilltop archaeological site on Mesa Vouno above Kamari and Perissa, where classical, Hellenistic, Roman, and Byzantine remains meet some of Santorini’s best views.

Ancient Thera is one of the most dramatic archaeological sites on Santorini, perched high on Mesa Vouno between Kamari and Perissa. The setting alone makes it memorable: ruins spread across a ridge with open views over the island and the sea, combining archaeology with one of the strongest panoramas in Santorini.
The official Visit Greece pages describe Ancient Thera as the only town on the island in ancient times, founded by Dorian colonists and laid out in terraces on the hill at a height of roughly 369 metres. The site includes the Sanctuary of Artemis, the Agora, the Royal Portico, the Temple of Apollo Karneios, the Gymnasium of the Epheboi, a theatre, and other civic and religious remains. That variety makes it one of the clearest ways to understand Santorini beyond the prehistoric story of Akrotiri.
Ancient Thera gives Santorini a second historical dimension. If Akrotiri explains the prehistoric island, Ancient Thera shows the classical, Hellenistic, Roman, and later layers of settlement. The official Santorini history pages also emphasize that Ancient Thera was founded around 900 BC and remained inhabited into the Byzantine period, which helps explain why the site includes such a mix of structures and periods. It pairs naturally with your Akrotiri, Museum of Prehistoric Thera, and things to do in Santorini pages.
Expect an exposed hilltop archaeological site rather than a shaded urban museum. The atmosphere is part of the experience: strong sun, wind, open vistas, and a sense of remoteness above the beach towns below. This is one of Santorini’s best cultural stops for travelers who enjoy archaeology and hiking-style sightseeing in the same outing.
The official Cyclades Ephorate pages currently list the site at 08:30-15:30, closed Wednesday, with ticket prices of €10 regular and €5 reduced, and contact phone +30 22860 25405. More detailed official service information for the 2025/2026 winter period notes that 01.11.2025-30.11.2025 the site operated Friday-Sunday 08:30-15:30, that 01.12.2025-28.02.2026 visits were by arrangement with the Ephorate, and that from 01.03.2026-31.03.2026 the site returned to 08:30-15:30. Because schedules can vary by season and site staffing, checking the official page before visiting is the safest approach.
Local tip: Visit Ancient Thera early in the day, not only for the light and views but because the hilltop setting can feel far hotter and more exposed than it looks from the beach towns below.
