Monumental Athenian temple ruin and the largest ancient temple on mainland Greece, famous today for its surviving Corinthian columns and central city setting.

The Temple of Olympian Zeus is one of the grandest surviving monuments of ancient Athens and one of the clearest reminders of the city’s long architectural ambition. Even in its ruined state, the Olympeion still reads as monumental: a line of giant Corinthian columns rising from the plain just southeast of the Acropolis, with the city and the Sacred Rock still visible beyond.

The Temple of Olympian Zeus works especially well for travelers exploring Athens on foot because it sits close to several of the city’s major highlights. It pairs naturally with your Acropolis of Athens, Acropolis Museum, and best things to do in Athens pages. The site is also easy to combine with a wider walk through the historic center and the nearby monumental zone.
This is a site of scale and setting rather than dense ruins. The Official Athens Guide notes that the temple once measured almost 100 metres long and nearly 50 metres wide, and that today 15 standing columns and one fallen column remain. That makes the experience visually striking even if the visit itself is shorter than at larger archaeological complexes such as the Acropolis or the Ancient Agora.
The official Ministry of Culture page currently lists €20 full admission and €10 reduced admission for the Olympieio archaeological site. It also lists seasonal hours of winter 08:00-15:00 with last entrance at 14:40 and summer 08:00-20:00 with last entrance at 19:30. The Official Athens Guide gives the current address as Vasilissis Olgas, Athens 105 57 and the site phone as +30 210 922 6330. The official Hellenic Heritage ticketing system also notes that timed-entry tickets are required for visitors.
Local tip: The Temple of Olympian Zeus is best treated as part of a wider central Athens route rather than a standalone half-day site. Its impact comes from the scale of the columns and the city context around them, not from the length of the visit itself.
