The best hotels in Thassos (or Thasos) are primarily located in Thassos town or at the famous beach resorts of Pefkari, Potos, or Limenaria. Still, there are some very good hotels all over the island. Thassos has some impressive new hotels and resorts and it’s one of the greenest islands in Greece.

About Thassos Island
Thassos is a remarkably unique Greek island that doesn’t belong to any of the famous island groups like the Cyclades, Sporades, Ionian Islands, or Dodecanese. Situated in the northern Aegean Sea just off the coast of Eastern Macedonia, it’s the northernmost Greek island and one of the closest to mainland Greece.
What makes Thassos truly special is its extraordinary natural beauty—dense pine forests, olive groves, and mountain peaks that plunge dramatically into crystal-clear turquoise waters.
The island has a rich history dating back to the Stone Age, with ancient ruins, traditional mountain villages, and a distinctive local culture that blends mainland Greek traditions with island hospitality.
Thassos is renowned for its bright white marble (some of the finest in the world), exceptional local honey, extra virgin olive oil, and the unique PDO Throumba olives that are sun-dried directly on the tree.
Thassos is an island mostly visited by people who live in northern Greece and is probably not that popular for people who visit Greece for the first time but it is honestly a little gem.

How to Get to Thassos
Thassos is one of the islands furthest from Athens and quite different to reach compared to the southern Greek islands. There is no airport on the island, which actually contributes to its unspoiled, peaceful atmosphere. The island is accessible only by ferry from two ports on the mainland: Kavala town and Keramoti town.
The best approach is to fly into Kavala International Airport (also known as Alexander the Great Airport), which receives international flights during the summer season and year-round domestic connections from Athens. From Kavala, you can take a ferry directly to Thassos Town (Limenas), or drive 45 minutes to Keramoti for a shorter 35-minute ferry crossing to Thassos.
Always check Ferryhopper for the latest ferry schedules and Booking.com Flights for flights to Kavala. During peak summer season, ferries run frequently throughout the day, but it’s wise to check schedules in advance during shoulder seasons.
Getting Around Thassos
I highly recommend renting a car in Thassos. The island is quite large (approximately 380 square kilometers) with a 70-mile ring road that circles the coastline, connecting beautiful beaches, traditional mountain villages, and hidden coves.
While local buses do operate on Thassos, they won’t take you everywhere and run on limited schedules. With a car, you’ll have the freedom to explore beaches like Paradise, Marble Beach (Saliara), Golden Beach, and the stunning natural rock pool at Giola at your own pace.
If you prefer not to drive, the main tourist areas of Limenas, Limenaria, and Potos have good facilities within walking distance, and taxis are available for longer trips.
However, to truly experience everything Thassos has to offer—from the mountain villages of Theologos and Kastro to the secluded beaches on the eastern coast—a rental car is invaluable.

Best Areas to Stay in Thassos
Choosing where to stay in Thassos depends largely on what kind of holiday experience you’re seeking. The island offers several distinct areas, each with its own character and advantages.
Limenas (Thassos Town)
Limenas is the island’s capital and main port, offering the widest selection of shops, restaurants, cafes, car rental agencies, banks, and services. If you want maximum convenience and content, this is the place to stay.
The town has excellent access to some of the island’s best beaches including Makryammos (2km), Marble Beach (6km), and Paradise Beach (15km). The ancient agora and archaeological museum provide cultural interest, while the harbor buzzes with activity.
Limenaria
Limenaria is Thassos’s second-largest village, located on the southwestern coast about 38 kilometers from Limenas. It’s the perfect choice for those seeking a peaceful summer without crowds.
The village features a beautiful harbor with stunning views of Mount Athos, a long promenade lined with restaurants and cafes, and easy access to gorgeous beaches like Tripiti (3km) and Metalia.
The historic Palataki mansion and old mining sites add cultural interest. Limenaria strikes an ideal balance between tourist appeal and authentic local life.
Potos
Potos is the island’s liveliest resort, located just 2 kilometers from Limenaria on the southern coast. Originally the port for the traditional mountain village of Theologos, Potos has evolved into a vibrant destination famous for its nightlife, bars, and energetic atmosphere.
The beach is long and sandy with crystal-clear shallow waters, perfect for families during the day and a lively scene for younger travelers at night. If you want a place with soul and energy, Potos delivers.
Pefkari
Pefkari sits perfectly between Limenaria and Potos, named after the pine trees (“pefkos” in Greek) that surround its stunning beach. This was one of the first areas in southern Thassos to develop as a tourist resort. The beach has earned Blue Flag status for its cleanliness and excellent facilities, offering water sports including diving, plus beachfront restaurants and bars. It’s a cosmopolitan yet natural choice with easy access to both quieter Limenaria and livelier Potos.
Golden Beach & Skala Potamias
Golden Beach (Chrysi Ammoudia) and neighboring Skala Potamias on the northeastern coast offer some of the island’s most spectacular stretches of sand. These Blue Flag beaches feature fine golden sand, clear shallow waters perfect for families, and excellent tourist infrastructure.
The area is about 13km from Limenas and provides access to the picturesque mountain village of Potamia with its traditional tavernas and authentic Greek village atmosphere.

Unlike the whitewashed Cycladic islands or the cosmopolitan Dodecanese, Thassos is known as the “Emerald Isle” of Greece for its remarkably green landscapes. Dense pine forests cascade down mountainsides to meet crystalline turquoise waters, creating a unique backdrop for your Greek island holiday. The island’s hotels take full advantage of this natural beauty, with many properties built directly on beaches or perched on hillsides overlooking the Aegean Sea.

How much money do I need for a week in Thassos?
Thassos offers good value compared to more famous Greek islands. A mid-range budget for a couple might be €100-150 per day including accommodation, meals at local tavernas, a rental car, and beach activities. Luxury seekers should budget €200-400+ per day for premium hotels and fine dining. Budget travelers staying in simpler accommodations and cooking some meals could manage on €60-80 per day.
What are the best beaches in Thassos?
Thassos has more stunning beaches than you could visit in a single trip! Top picks include: Marble Beach (Saliara) with its striking white marble pebbles, Paradise Beach for organized facilities and water sports, Golden Beach (Chrysi Ammoudia) for families with its fine sand and shallow waters, Makryammos for the resort beach experience, Giola for its unique natural rock pool, and Psili Ammos for fine sand in a secluded setting.
Is Thassos crowded in summer?
Thassos is primarily visited by Greeks from northern Greece and travelers from neighboring Balkan countries (Bulgaria, Romania, Serbia). It’s less crowded than famous islands like Santorini, Mykonos, or Rhodes. July and August are busiest, but even then, the island feels manageable, and many beaches remain peaceful. For quieter visits, consider May, June, September, or early October.
Do I need to book hotels in advance?
For peak summer season (July-August), advance booking is strongly recommended, especially for popular hotels and specific room categories. The best properties book up months ahead. For shoulder seasons (May-June, September-October), you’ll have more flexibility, though booking ahead still ensures better prices and availability at preferred properties.
