Skyros island is not that far from Athens, but it’s not easy to reach it by ferry, as you have to drive (or take a bus) to Kymi port in eastern Evia island. However, the best thing to do is to take a direct flight from Athens, since Skyros has a small (but not international) airport. There are many flights per week between May and October in the summer (always check Ferryhopper for the latest ferry schedules and Booking.com Flights for the most up-to-date flights to Greek islands).
You need a car in Skyros, as it’s a pretty big island with many areas to see and explore. There are local buses, but you’ll be more flexible if you rent a car, in my opinion.
